History

Cathkin Park is an unusual open space within the city as it is the former ground of Third Lanark Athletic Club who once played football at the ground until liquidation in the courts in 1967. At this time the council took over the maintenance of the park and developed it as a municipal open space and it remains as an area to play football. The park retains some of the original terracing from its time as a football gound. The ground was originally the Queens Park Ground and staged its first league game in 1884 and at this time the ground then was called Hampden Park and Queens Park played there until they moved to the present site of Hampden Park in 1903. When Third Lanark took over the ground in 1903, they renamed it Cathkin Park. Whilst known as Hampden Park in staged a number of Scottish Cup Finals and even Scotland played England there in 1894.

Facilities

The park has no formalised facilities but instead provides an open space for playing sports on the south side of the city.
