Garscadden Burn Park
History
The park follows the route of the Garscadden Burn which was once part of the estate dating from the 14th century established by the Fleming family. In 1644 the Colquhoun family took over the estate and in 1723 construction of Garscadden House began and was finished in 1747. During the ownership by the Colquhoun family, many trees were planted including shelterbelt tree planting.Garscadden House became the property of Glasgow Corporation in 1938 and during the Second World War was used to house evacuees. Unfortunately, Garscadden House was destroyed by fire in 1960.
Facilities
There are no formal facilities in the park, although the Donald Dewar Leisure Centre is close by. The park provides a habitat for a number of species including water voles and has rough grasslands and scrub and where the soil is sandy there are local relic areas of acidic grassland and dwarf shrub heath. There are also large open areas of swamp and fen with many marsh species, including orchids and several rare sedges, including the Greater Tussock-sedge and in the west an area of wet woodland supporting with Alder and Crack Willow growing over rich fen and swamp vegetation.
