History

The park was donated to the city in 1966 and was once the estate of the Maxwell family who had lived there since 1269. There is evidence for the area having residency prior to this from archaeological remains of a wooden structure dating back to 1160 which was located on the banks of the White Cart Water. Around 1270a fortified tower with a moat and drawbridge and was builtby the first Maxwell on high ground where the woodland garden in now located and around 1500, this was replaced byNether Pollok Castle built on the banks of the river where the Old Stable Courtyard now stands. Nether Pollock Castle was destroyed by fire in 1882 and the area was cleared and the stable courtyard built. Pollok House was built in 1752 and this became the family's main residence, but curiously for such a grand building, the architect remains unknown. In 1983 the Burrell Collection was housed in a purpose-built building within the grounds.
