Third Lanark AFC were a football club that played at Cathkin Park, Glasgow from 1872-1967.

The clubs nickname was the hi-hi's.

The club was declared bankrupt and was liquidated in 1967. Boardroom corruption allegedly played a role in this. The role of the chairman of Thirds remains subject to intense debate to this day. They may have wished to personally profit from the sale of Cathkin Park for property development - Cathkin was sold for housing during the 1967 close season, but Glasgow City Council refused building permission.

Third Lanark - Urban GlasgowCathkin Park is still in existence to this day and you can clearly see the outline of the stadium. The three sides of the terracing are still in place, though there is a large gap along one touchline of the pitch where the main stand once stood. The ground had a pavillion off to the right hand side of the main stand which housed the players dressing rooms, similar to the one at Airdrieonians old ground Broomfield, which is also now gone. Fulham, who play in the English Premier League, have a similar pavillion building at their ground, Craven Cottage. The South terracing, opposite the main stand, had a pitched roof covering the terrace but this was removed after the club folded. The pitch itself, once boldly declared the best in Scotland, is still in use for amateur level matches, though it now appears to be a little narrower than it would've been for profession games.

The End Of A Great Club

The last day of season 1960/61 saw Third Lanark reach an historic landmark. They beat Hibernian 6-1 at Cathkin Park to reach a commendable 100 goals for the season.

There followed yet another two seasons of mediocrity and discontent, ending in the humiliating defeat at Boghead when Dumbarton recorded a 5-1 victory, on Friday, 28th April 1967 (the final Thirds goal was scored by future Airdrie and Hearts star Drew Busby). This game ended the football involvement of Thirds as a senior professional club.

They were the last senior club to go Bankrupt in Scotland until Clydebank in 2002.

The hi-hi's won the Scottish Cup on 2 occasions in 1889 and 1905.
