History

Victoria Park was originally acquired by Partick Borough before being annexed to Glasgow and Originally acquired by the Burgh of Partick, Victoria Park was named for Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee in 1886 and opened on the 2nd July 1887. I currently coversa total of 50 acres but was larger before the development of the Clydeside Expressway. The park incorporates ponds that were once used for boating but now act as a refuge for water birds. There are also bowling greens with a small putting course near to it, and Fossil Grove. It also has 2 curling rinks beside the arboretum.

There is a four sided clock, donated by William Gordon Oswald in 1888, which is still working. The Jubilee Gates located on Victoria Park Drive North were originally located on Balshagary Avenue, but were moved during the construction of the nearby Clydeside Expressway and Clyde Tunnel.

The Fossil Grove

The fossil trees, which were uncovered by removal of the surrounding rocks, are the remains of an ancient forest, around 330 million years old. This has been designated a site of Special Scientific Interest. The fossilised tree stumps were discovered in 1887 when an old quarry was being landscaped as part of the work during the creation of the park. Careful excavation of the site uncovered the fossil remains, and a building was erected to protect them from the elements.

The most obvious feature of the site is the 11 fossil tree stumps, some of them up to 90 centimetres high, preserved in the position in which they once grew. A fallen trunk, about eight metres long, and other smaller fragments of branch and root, have also survived. They are the fossil remains of an extinct type of plant known as a giant clubmoss.

Facilities

The park has bowling greens and tennis courts as well as red blaes football pitches. There was apitch and put and crazy golf, but these are no longer in regular use. There are also 2 curling rinks which would at one time have been flooded in the winter. There are children's play areas and the park hosts some of the best floral displays in any Glasgow park.
